Horde im Tatort

Horde Groupware played a role in Germany's number one crime series on Sunday evening.

"Mum we're on TV" or "Beste Einschaltquoten für Horde"

English version below

English version

Some introduction to the German phenomenon "Tatort": Tatort is the longest running, most successful, and most favorite crime series in German TV. Running since 1970 it has piled up more than 900 episodes. Different teams from different parts of Germany solve the case-of-the-day, often with some more or less subtle sociocritical undertone or political criticism. About 10 million viewers gather regularly in front of the TV screen, which is often a rate of 30% of all viewers on Sunday evening's prime time.

What a surprise on a Sunday evening! Sitting on the couch without a clue, enjoying the ritual of watching Tatort together with 10 million fellow Germans like every Sunday. This week's episode is from southern Germany's city of Stuttgart. When it happened: The quite common scene from every crime series in front of some computer monitor passes by. Futuristically looking lines of source code scroll frantically across the screen (this time some kernel logs). Suddenly the oh-so well known screen that I'm looking at most of my day. My outcry makes the greatest woman on earth next to me almost fall from the couch: "That's our Horde!"

And really, that's indeed Horde Groupware appearing almost fullscreen on the TV panel. Full stop. Rewind. Watch again. OMG!

It's not just some background stuffing with nerdy computer content. No, it plays a role. A real one! It's the iconic email account of the bad guys (of course!) that those used to plan their crime. Who cares, the bad roles are the more interesting anyway.

But what's that? That's not our mailbox design, is it? Looks like they really mocked up the mailbox listing and put it into the frame of the Horde webmail client. All kind of goofy oal.com email address and the like (real brands or any kind of product placement are not allowed in German public TV networks, they even removed the "Horde" logo), and conspirational subject lines. And what a bad mockup. Looks like built with Word from someone who's not even able to align some columns. The CGI production department of public TV is probably really some unpaid intern or the editor-in-chief's nephew. But at least the message popup view is almost looking like the original.

But no reason to complain. Horde Groupware had an appearance and even a real role in a real "Tatort", at a real prime time, with an audience rate of 29%. I almost couldn't sleep that night, full of excitement. Not because the crime story was such a thrill. Even though it was indeed one of the better episodes, despite the rather construed final.

I'm already looking forward to tell this story to my grandchildren: Grandpa once appeared in "Tatort"! Or some such.
